Wow. They aired that "Who Wants Marry A Multi-Millionaire?" show on Tuesday (the 15th), and I am *still* musing over those 2 hours and totally blown away by what happened.
I mean, this guy is supposed to pick out his life partner among 50 selected women in 2 hours? Geeeeeez. And he *knows* that the first thing that caught their attention was his million(s). And dude, the guy lives in San Diego, of all places... and the girl was from Santa Monica... both places I'm familiar with.
It was unbelievable. Watching the first 3/4 of the show was fine, since it seemed mostly like another Miss USA pageant, only the women weren't as hot. Then it got down to the five finalists in their wedding gowns and the guy standing in front of them about to propose... and I *almost* couldn't watch! It finally hit me that he was going to *marry* one of these women, none of whom he knew at all, and spend the rest of his life with her. It just seemed so fantastically incredible...
The whole idea of gold-digging women parading for a chance to marry into wealth appalled me, at first. I say "at first" because the more I think about it, the more I think the millionaire guy might've lucked out. Hey, maybe I'm totally being a naive, optimistic nut here, but it seemed to me that the guy actually made a good choice out of the options he was given.
For one thing, the guy -- well, Rick Rockwell's his name, just to stop calling him "the guy" -- seemed pretty sensible to begin with. He's 42, been around, seen a lot, sounded pretty down-to-earth and practical (although how practical the idea of going on a TV show to find a wife is, I don't know). The woman he chose, Darva Conger, was 34 -- mature, and seemed like she knew what she wanted in life. Makes sense, she's had time to explore and get a real head on her shoulders, versus those several *college* students that were competing. I think out of the 5 finalists, Darva was the oldest too.
In general, it seemed like the two were suited to each other and might actually hit it off. I kinda really hope they will. Rick totally seemed like a really nice guy and deserved some happiness...
That, and he's a San Diegan, of course. ;)
